New Delhi: You must have heard the name of VPN or Virtual Private Network which is a network technology and is used to extend private networks across public networks.

VPN is a service used on the Internet, which protects your data from leaking and gives you online privacy. VPN hides your IP address, due to which you can work on the Internet by keeping yourself confidential online.

This tool establishes a private connection, also known as a VPN tunnel, through which all the traffic and communications are routed. If you use a free VPN then it has some limitations, but if you buy then, in that case, you will get a good bandwidth along with several features.

Here, we will discuss the different types of VPNs and where should you use them, but before going forward, one should know that variables like speed, security, cost, bandwidth and VPN protocols are to keep in mind while choosing the right VPN service.

Remote Acess VPNs:

This type of user allows a user to connect to a private network and access its service and resources remotely. The connection between the users and the private network is through the Internet and the connection is secure and private. It is useful for business users as well as home users.

A corporate employee, while traveling, often uses a VPN to connect to his company's private network and remotely access files and resources on the private network.

Home users, or private users of VPNs, primarily use VPN services to bypass regional restrictions on the Internet and access blocked websites. Internet security-conscious users also use VPN services to increase their Internet security and privacy.

Site-To-Site VPNs:

These types of VPNs are mostly used in corporate. Companies, with offices in different geographic locations, use site-to-site VPNs to connect networks at one office location to networks at another office location. When multiple offices of the same company are connected using a Site-to-site VPN type, it is called an Intranet-based VPN.

When companies use a Site-to-site VPN to connect to another company's office, it is called an extranet-based VPN. Site-to-site VPN creates a virtual bridge between networks in geographically distant offices and connects them via the Internet and maintains secure and private communication between networks.

Since site-to-site VPN is based on router-to-router communication, in this VPN one router acts as the VPN client and the other router acts as the VPN server. The communication between the two routers only starts after the authentication is validated between the two.

Client To Server VPN:

One can use this VPN while accessing insecure public WLANs. Here the connection is encrypted till it reaches the provider; it stops ISPs and third parties from compromising data.

In addition to these, establishing a secure connection between clients and a corporate network; maintains the security and resources of the network. It creates a new VPN tunnel that allows a user to access the network without affecting the security and privacy.

Peer-To-Peer Network:

In a P2P network, "peers" are computer systems that are connected to each other via the Internet. Files can be shared directly between systems over the network, without the need for a central server. In another language, each computer on a P2P network becomes a file server as well as a client.

However, a P2P VPN can secure users' data but cannot keep them safe from malicious files. The risk of malicious actors being present in the network is always there as peer-to-peer networks depend on data being hosted by different nodes.
