WhatsApp Banned Over 47 Lakh Accounts in March 2023

According to the report, out of the total 4715906 banned accounts, 1656385 were proactively banned before any user reported them.

NEW DELHI: Popular messaging platform, Whatsapp has announced that the company has banned over 47 lakh accounts in the country for malicious behaviour. This information came in the Monthy India Report published by the Meta-owned brand for the month of May.

This report is published by the company to maintain compliance with the IT Rules of 2021. This report contains details of the user complaints received and the corresponding actions being taken by the company. It also highlights the preventive actions being taken by the company in order to prevent abuse on the messaging platform for spreading malicious content.

According to the report, out of the total 4715906 banned accounts, 1656385 were proactively banned before any user reported them. These were banned between March 1 and March 31, 2023.

"WhatsApp is an industry leader in preventing abuse, among end-to-end encrypted messaging services. Over the years, we have consistently invested in Artificial Intelligence and other state-of-the-art technology, data scientists and experts, and in processes, in order to keep our users safe on our platform," mentioned a spokesperson regarding the filtering of accounts.

The report also mentioned that a total of 4720 complaints were received by the company in the month of March and actions were taken on 585 out of them. Action denotes either the banning of a number from using the Whatsapp messaging services or restoring the services on a number which was earlier banned after reviewing the content being shared.

It is important to note that India has the highest number of users on this popular messaging platform and the number increases every year by more than 10%. However, it has also been used as a tool to spread fake news and other malicious content in the past few years. In recent times, it has become a tool used for several forms of financial fraud.
