DHEMAJI, October 19: Construction of a hydro-electric project of 80 MW capacity on the Jiadhal River has been planned by the present BJP government of Assam. Pradan Barua, local BJP MLA revealed this in a meeting.

Jiadhal River is known as 'Sorrow of Dhemaji' for the devastation caused by it. Many people became homeless due to heavy damage caused by annual flood and erosion. Heavy siltation has resulted in flood and erosion. Taking all this into consideration, the BJP government of Assam has made a plan to construct dam over the Jiadhal River at the basin inside Aruchal Pradesh, 6.5 km away from the Assam-Aruchal border. Preparation of Detailed Project Report of the Jiadhal Dam has already been completed. This blue print of the project was revealed by Pradan Barua, Dhemaji MLA.

Barua said that he would visit the site very soon with a high-level team of experts of

India Water Commission and Brahmaputra Board. The process of geological investigation, construction  investigation, environment impact assessment and environment magement plan studies are in full progress. At the same time, the visiting team will study the socio-economic conditions of the people of the catchment areas. Special attention will also be given so that the river does not dry up or inundate at any cost to cause harm to the people, Barua added.
