SIVASAGAR, June 15: With a motive to showcase the role of police in the society, the Sivasagar Police Association in collaboration with All Assam Police Association (AAPA), on Wednesday organized a semir with the theme ‘Present Day Society and Police’ at the Yuva Dol auditorium, Sivasagar.

Assam ADGP (administration) KV Singh Deo, who attended the semir as the chief guest, while praising the role of Assam Police in public service, said, “Assam Police earned a special fame amongst the other States. Assam Police has been being devoted to public service. This is why Village Defense Party (VDP) has been formed first in Assam. Assam Police have been offering their best supportive and helping hands towards every public who have approached them. Public cooperation is the most important ingredient in the work of police, and therefore, Assam Police is always eager to maintain a cordial relationship with public.” He also stressed that media could play a pivotal role in cultivating a cordial relation between police-public.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Anil Saikia, former Principal of Moran College said, “It seems that a section of police still inherits the mentality of British rule to torture public. They assume that they are superior to common people. They never realize that they are here to serve people. People still fear to approach police without hesitation. People still fear to see a police before them whether it is day or night. So, it cannot be said that police have developed a full-fledged cordial relationship with public.” He also stressed the need to expand the number of police stations and man-power in police department. “Nevertheless, Assam Police is trying to put their best with the limited support they get from the government,” Saikia said.

DIG, Eastern Range Bishnu Prasad Rabha, Sibsagar Commerce College Principal Dr Saumarjyoti Mahanta and noted educationist Monika Saika also spoke on the occasion. Jorhat Superintendent of Police, Amarjit Kaur, Sivasagar District Development Commissioner, Abhijit Baruah, Charaideo Superintendent of Police, Manish Mishra and AAPA secretary Taheruddin Ahmed attended the function as distinguished guests.

Earlier, Sivasagar Superintendent of Police, And Prakash Tiwari iugurated the occasion with plantation of sapling which was followed by welcome speech.
