Bharat Chandra Choudhury: A tribute

Sentinel Digital Desk

O ur liking for each other was almost instantaneous as I met Bharat Chandra Choudhury on joining the Prison headquarters, then in Shillong, way back in 1974, and our official relationship soon turned into an emotiol bonding that lasted ever since till he breathed his last on December 24, 2016 at his residence at Mathgharia in Guwahati.

Hailing from Bezera in Kamrup district, Choudhury retired on December 31, 2000 as Registrar of the Prison Directorate after putting in 34 years of meritorious service with full devotion and dedication. Endowed with a friendly and pleasing demeanor and a balanced, unbiased outlook, he was a popular persolity, both in official and social circles, as much as he was a loving and responsible figure as a husband and a father.

Together with Abdus Sobhan who retired in 2002 as DIG of Prisons, we formed a trio while in office, and rarely a day passed when we did not stch a while to meet in my chamber, talking about anything from cabbages to kings. I am pleased to recall that it was just a month before his end when the three of us met at his place for a good couple of hours, going back to our good old days full of fun and frolic along with work.

On this day of his adya shraddha, I pray to the Almighty for eterl peace of his departed soul.
