Mumbai University VC SV Deshmukh to speak at Assam varsity convocation

Silchar, March 13: Dr Sanjay V Deshmukh, Vice-Chancellor of Mumbai University, will address the 15th Convocation of Assam University on March 15. Established in 1994, this central university has made for itself a place of distinction among all the universities of northeast as well as in the country as a whole.

Dr Deshmukh obtained his MSc from the Institute of Science, University of Mumbai, in 1986 and got his PhD from the same university in botany in 1990. He is one of the youngest PhD degree holders of Mumbai University, which he obtained at the age of 25. As an associate of School of Ecology at Institute of Science, during 1986 and 1990, he travelled extensively to study major mangrove formations in all the coastal states of India, including the island regions of Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar. His PhD dissertation was entitled “Ecological Studies of Mangroves in Bombay”.

 Dr Deshmukh has served as scientist and head of Coastal Systems Research Programme at the M S Swamithan Research Centre in Cheni for five years, from 1990-1995. He was principal scientist at the Bombay tural History Society between 1995 and 1999. He was also director (programmes) at the Mav Sadhan Vikas Sanstha during 1999-2001 and was director (research) at Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini during 2001-2003.
