ITANAGAR: The All East Kameng District Students' Union (AEKDSU) has threatened to declare 36-hour East Kameng district bandh if the state government fails to suspend the officers involved in the multi-crore Seppa-Chayangtajo NEC road project scam by January 23 next year.

Along with various student organizations of the district, the AEKDSU on Thursday carried out a peaceful protest rally from the Akashdeep complex to IG Park near here.

Speaking to reporters, AEKDSU president Chakang Yangda alleged that there had been huge mismanagement of funds meant for the construction of the 81-km Seppa-Chayangtajo NEC road. He said a chargesheet should be filed against all the officials found to be involved in the misappropriation of Rs 172 crore.

He further said that the Special Investigation Cell (SIC) of state police had been entrusted to investigate the scam but there was no progress or outcome till date. However, the SP (SIC) had earlier informed that chargesheet has already been filed in the matter.

"AEKDSU has been appealing to the state government to expedite the construction of the Seppa-Chayangtajo road project at the earliest. Rather, the state government is only issuing verbal assurances and neglecting practical action so far. This is the reason why the union is compelled to resort to the democratic movement," he added.

Yangda also said that other demands of the union included immediate floating of tender against Rs. 19.92 crore which was released under Special Assistance from state capital expenditure for construction and improvement of the Seppa-Chayangtajo road, the immediate termination of erring contractors and initiation of departmental inquiry.
