BOMDILA: West Kameng Deputy Commissioner (DC) Karma Leki spearheaded the cleaning and plantation drive on the 0.75 hectares of the "sinking zone" between Lower Gompa and Power house, here on Saturday.

The drive was initiated in an effort to encourage afforestation and beautify the district. The DC said that the plantation in the area has been necessitated on account of its vulnerability.

"A total of 500 saplings of Illicium Griffithii were planted in the stretch to contain landslides and secure the area as there are a few habitations on the leeward side," Leki poined out. The saplings were provided by the Department of Forest & Environment, Bomdila.

Taking part in the drive, the Abbot of Lower Gompa, Guru Tulku Rinpoche proposed the construction of 'Manes' and a 'Chorten' in the area for beautification and conservation. Properly planned and executed, the place can be developed into tourist destination spot, he pointed out.

Chorten is a visual document of Buddhist architecture, to house Buddhist relic or 'ringsrel' to support worship. In Ladakh, Chortens are usually accompanied by the 'Mani' walls or 'mane thang' and the colorful flags or 'tarchok' that flutters round the clock thus bringing life to the deafening silence.
