BANDERDEWA: The confiscated items include carcasses of two barking deer, dried wild boar meat, dried porcupine, jungle fowl, squirrel, farm civet and 15 birds of three different species.

The DFO of Banderdewa, HB Abo said that while the carcasses were transported in a bus from East Kameng and Pakke Kessang districts, the birds were brought from Hoj village in Doimukh.

All the seized meat and carcasses were destroyed at Kola Camp near Doimukh by the Forest officials. The seized dried meat of jungle fowl will be sent for testing to a forensic laboratory at PTC, Banderdewa.

Taking note of the rampant selling of wildlife meat in the State, the All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union (AAPSU) has urged the State government to take necessary action to prevent such activities.

In May 2019, following a report of how several wild animals and birds were put up for sale at Shimong Village in the State's Upper Siang district, the Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) of Central Arunachal Circle released a strongly-worded letter to the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Yingkiong over the issue.

He also instructed the DFO to seize all the wild animals, apprehend the culprits and take strong action as per provisions of the 'Wildlife Protection Act-1972'.

The CCF also expressed disappointment over the display of wild animals including civets, mongoose, barking deer, flying squirrel and pheasants, among others, at public places without the fear of the forest department.

Mentionably, flying squirrels and pheasants are endangered species. (Agencies)
