LONGDING: The district Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary conducted a free anti-rabies vaccination programme and de-worming at the Veterinary Dispensary near here on Wednesday.

The celebration was to commemorate the 75 years of Indian Independence, 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav'.

Free anti-rabies vaccination and de-worming medicines were given to the pets.

Addressing the gathering, District Veterinary Officer Dr Taken Kamchi said that rabies is a viral zoonotic disease that is transmitted to people and from animal to animal from the saliva of infected animals. Rabies is usually transmitted through an animal bite, for example, from stray dogs. Meanwhile, Veterinary Officer Dr Mitek Tarang informed that the first anti-rabies vaccination is given when the puppy is three months old and the booster dose must be given annually.

"Both de-worming and vaccination on a regular basis are essential to avoid serious health problems for the pets," Mitek added.
