Itanagar: Mooting the idea of developing a divyangjan (persons with disability) brigade and deploying them along the Indo-China border, Social Justice & Empowerment and Tribal Affairs (SJETA) Minister Alo Libang on Tuesday said that it will secure the international border to avoid repetition of 1962 Chinese aggression.
Addressing a function here on the occasion of International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD), Libang said that no enemy could defeat divyangjans as they never cow down against any adversities.
“Divyangjans with their divine qualities are inferior to none and indivisible part of the society for which the people should stand behind them to ensure equal rights like others,” the minister said after felicitating trendsetters with certificate and cash award, a scheme instituted by SJETA department.
About 26 million divyangjans are born globally every year, including 1.7 million (9.6%) in India, Libang said adding, the day should aim at reducing the number.
Stressing on effective implementation of Matru Vandana Saptah, with the theme ‘Surakshit Janani, Vikshit Dharan’ under Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, which he had launched on Monday, Libang said that the society could get worthy citizens only by taking care of pregnant mothers with adequate food and love or else who knows the newborn could be divyangjans.
Libang also distributed walking sticks, crutch and wheel chairs to the beneficiaries. He lauded SJETA staff and exhorted them to work with renewed tempo being the nodal department entrusted with responsibility to uplift divyangjans to walk hand-in-hand with others in the society.
SJETA director Yumlum Kaha earlier highlighted ongoing schemes under Arunachal Pradesh Rehabilitation of Disability Act, 2008 and despite fund paucity conducted camps in 13 districts and distributed aids & appliances free to them.
The State Government had also implemented unique ID for PwDs but the cards are yet to be fully generated due to incomplete data received from Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Science (TRIHMS), Kaha said.
The SJETA observed the day in collaboration with Arunachal branch of National Institute of Locomotor Disabilities and All Arunachal Pradesh Divyangjan Welfare Society led by President Patong Tong.
