ITANAGAR: Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) Mayor Tame Phassang on Sunday exhorted the members of the Nyishi community to celebrate its prestigious festival, "Nyokum Yullo," with full rituals while maintaining the age-old tradition.
Attending the Nyokum Yullo in Naharlagun along with IMC Commissioner Likha Teji, Phassang, while extending festival greetings, said, "Nyokum is being celebrated by the Nyishi community, in which they offer prayers and seek blessings for the well-being of mankind." The community should maintain the age-old tradition and rituals of the festival. "Without rituals, the celebration of Nyokum is incomplete."
The mayor also stressed the importance of education in society and urged the people to encourage education, saying that education is the only way to develop a society. He exhorted the younger generation not to misuse society, social services, and social media.
"If these three "S" can be used in the right direction, we will definitely achieve positive development on all fronts, but if misused, they may bring destruction to society," he pointed out.
Phassang also assured to extend all possible support to the festival celebration committee for the celebration of Nyokum in a grand manner next year.
Earlier, the IMC commissioner said in his address that Nyokum Yullo is not a religious festival but a secular festival where people from every walk of life can participate irrespective of their religion, caste, or creed.
"We should join the celebration with our family, including children, to show them how rich our culture and tradition are, as well as to educate them about its preservation," Teji added.
Besides the regular rituals, community feasts were also organized to mark the celebration.
