ITANAGAR: Arunachal Pradesh's Minister for Home, Information & Public Relations Bamang Felix has called upon Indian Journalists Union (IJU) leadership to help the State Government to formulate a policy to regulate the mushroom growth of digital and social media.
Addressing the IJU National Executive Meeting here recently Felix said, "In the era of social media, people are confused to make out who are real journalists and who are self-proclaimed journalists. I appeal to the IJU leadership to discuss and work out a policy and provide suggestions to the department to bring a mechanism to regulate it. I will ensure that required laws will be enacted, if the IJU can come up with a policy," Felix said.
The Home Minister added that the incumbent State Government has always been a media-friendly Government and highlighted the major reformative steps taken by the Pema Khandu-led Government for the welfare of the Press community.
IJU president Geetartha Pathak said in his address, " Journalism per se is not a profession, as profession provides adequate economic support to professionals, which is not the case with journalism.''
"COVID-19 has created challenges for media houses and mediapersons. We would discuss the safety of journalists, the wage issue and working atmosphere in the NEC to make our journalism better," the IJU president said.
IJU secretary general Sabina Inderjit said, "NEC Itanagar would be a historic NEC, we will discuss major challenges we are facing as mediapersons, how the media is being trampled and choked.
