ITANAGAR: Around 30 pigs died under mysterious circumstances in a village in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tirap district, causing panic among the villagers, a senior official from the district said on Wednesday. The pigs, which were bought by villagers of Chomuithong village in the district at throwaway prices from nearby Assam, have died all of a sudden recently, Tirap Deputy Commissioner (DC) Hento Karga informed. He said after a few days, the pigs died all of a sudden, causing panic among the innocent villagers. “I have instructed the veterinary and animal husbandry department officials to conduct an investigation to find out the cause of the deaths,” Karga said. He added that poultry farms in Chomuithong and surrounding areas have also been affected.
The deputy commissioner further disclosed that the department could not confirm the cause of the deaths of pigs as the villagers disposed of the dead pigs using JCB. “The veterinarians could not conduct lab tests or post-mortem examinations; therefore, they are unable to ascertain the cause of death of the pigs,” the DC said. Karga, however, said that the veterinarians are still on the ground and have yet to submit a report on the findings. Meanwhile, the Tirap district administration has issued an executive order prohibiting the import of pork from Assam and nearby districts as of Wednesday.
