Nine Puroik students receive Governor’s Excellence award in Arunachal

ITANAGAR: In a significant stride towards fostering socio-economic development and inclusivity, the Raj Bhavan here has taken a commendable step by conferring the prestigious Governor’s Excellence Award to nine outstanding students from the Puroik community on Thursday. The award was presented in recognition of their exceptional academic achievements and promise for the future, according to an official communiqué here. Puroiks are found in an estimated 53 villages in the districts of Subansiri and Upper Subansiri, Papumpare, Kurung Kumey, and East Kameng. Earlier, they were treated as bonded labourers, but now they are a free tribe. Their true freedom began in the 1990s, when the state tribal communities stopped keeping them as laborers. The official census indicates that there are approximately 9,000 Puroiks, but members of the community believe that the actual number ought to be over 20,000.

The Puroik Community has long been an integral part of the societal fabric, and this initiative by the Raj Bhavan underscores its commitment to the holistic development of all sections of society, particularly the marginalized. The Governor’s Excellence Award serves as a testament to the value that the administration places on education and empowerment as crucial drivers of progress. The recipients of the award include Jacinta Yakali, Yari Bechang, Laxman Bechangdao, Paji Yapa, Haye Danny, Ban Gram Yakli, Ruth Yachu, Eliza Puroik, and Daniel Bechang. The students have exhibited exemplary dedication and diligence in their academic pursuits, setting a high standard for their peers and embodying the potential for positive change within their community. The Raj Bhavan recognizes their efforts and encourages them to continue their pursuit of excellence in their chosen fields. By recognizing and encouraging academic excellence among the Puroik community's meritorious students, the Raj Bhavan reaffirms its commitment towards creating a more equitable and promising future for all, the communiqué added.
