NAHARLAGUN: The non-APST community of Naharlgun staged a protest rally against the ‘murder’ of one Dinesh Sahani (30 years) of Biswanath Charali, Assam, on October 8.
The deceased has been identified Dinesh Sahani while the accused has been identified as 33-year-old Gida Punio.
The incident happened on October 8 at around 6 pm near the helipad here when Sahani along with dozen others were heading back after the Dussehra idol immersion event. On their way back, the Tata Mobile pick-up truck that they were in bumped into a Mahindra Scorpio, driven by Punio. However, the driver of the pick-up truck didn’t stop and made an attempt to flee the scene. In the rush, the pick-up truck also rammed a scooty and then hit a wall after which it was immobilized.
Punio, in the meantime, caught up with the truck and then allegedly started assaulting driver Dowel Chaudari and Sahani. Later, Sahani was taken to a hospital here where the doctors declared him brought dead.
The non-APST community staged the protest rally demanding arrest of the culprit and punishment as per the law.
However, the culprit was promptly arrested by the police on the same evening within a short period of time. The accused, which reportedly have previous cases against him, has been charged under the IPC for murder and is currently behind bars.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been handed over to his relatives for the last rites, after conducting the post-mortem.
