Products of Northeast weavers must go from local to global: Neelam Mishra

ITANAGAR: Neelam Mishra, wife of Arunachal Pradesh Governor Brig (Retd) Dr B D Mishra, has called upon the people to preserve and promote the traditional loin loom weaving of the northeastern region.

While screening a documentary on loin loom weaving at Laikor Assam Rifles headquarters, near Shillong on Thursday, Mishra said that the rich tradition of loin loom weaving is prevalent only in the northeastern region now.

"We must put in a concerted effort in its preservation and encourage local weavers to carry it forward," she emphasized.

Mishra said that as most of the weavers of the region are women and loin loom weaving facilitates women's empowerment and thereby guarantees the socio-economic development of the people.

She said that the loin loom weaving tradition would contribute to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of Aatma Nirbhar Bharat.

Mishra stressed that the products of the tradition of local weavers of the Northeast must go from 'local to global and must be the fashion statement of the region.

A large number of ladies, led by Pushpa Nair, wife of the Director General of Assam Rifles Lt General PC Nair and President, attended the screening.
