Sports experts visit Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU)

ITANAGAR: Eminent sports personalities Dr Bhaskar Shukla, an expert in football and Yoga from PRSU, Prayagraj, Dr Mukesh Mitra, an expert in gymnastics from MMD College, Tripura and Dr Krishnakant, an expert in cricket from BHU, are on a visit to the Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU) here to assess the practical knowledge of the students pursuing BPEd and PGDYT courses in the central varsity.

Apart from assessment of the students, the trio delivered lecture on Yoga and its importance, gymnastics and its future scope and career in the cricketing world respectively.

On the sidelines of their visit, the called on Vice-Chancellor Prof Saket Kushwaha for a round table discussion.

Prof Kushwaha informed them about RGU's commitment to nation building through education and sports initiatives, and how the university had always supported sports, sports events and encouraged sporting talents.

Informing about the plan for starting a cricket academy at RGU, the VC informed that the university would soon launch a talent hunt to identify the vein in which the students would be performers in their chosen specialized fields.

Such commitment is reflected in the start of many sports science disciplines in the university in the last couple of years, including departments like sports physiology, sports psychology, sports biomechanics, strength training and conditioning and the department of physical education offering PhD, PG Diploma and UG programmes.

The VC further said that sports have always been an integral part of the university's curriculum.

RGU finance officer Prof Otem Padung opined that with the university opening and offering relevant courses on sports, it is preparing trained students to be the future generation of leaders in the area of sports education, especially from amongst the local students from diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds of the State.

RGU's joint registrar Dr David Pertin expressed his confidence that like the recent successes in the 2nd edition of Khelo India University Games at Bangalore by university's athletes, many success stories would be scripted in the near future. Although the departments under the faculty of Physical Education and Sports Sciences in RGU are in their maiden years, they have already achieved a coveted status.

The faculty's well designed courses have attracted students who wish to make a career in sports and related fields. This has been made possible due to the untiring efforts of university's highly committed, qualified and experienced faculty. They have integrated teaching and coaching with the latest developments and research in their respective fields and by relating these to real life scenarios they have created a holistic model of learning, Dr Pertin said.
