ITANAGAR: Arunachal Pradesh on Wednesday witnessed a sudden spurt in COVID-19 cases, with 23 more persons testing positive for the infection against nine the previous day, pushing the virus tally in the Northeastern State to 55,375, a senior Health Department official said.

Of the fresh cases, seven were reported from Lohit district, six from the Capital Complex Region, three from Namsai, two each from East Siang and Tawang and one each from West Kameng and West Siang district respectively, the official said.

One more person recuperated from the disease in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries to 55,048.

The recovery rate among COVID-19 patients in the State dipped to 99.41% from the previous day of 99.45%, while the active rate stood at 0.08%,, State Surveillance Officer (SSO) Dr Lobsang Jampa said.

The death toll remained at 282 as no fresh fatality due to the infection was reported during the period, he said.

Arunachal Pradesh now has 45 active cases.

The Capital Complex Region, comprising Itanagar, Naharlagun, Nirjuli and Banderdewa areas, has the highest number of active cases at 20, followed by Lohit at 11, Tawang (four), West Kameng and Namsai at three cases each, East Siang (two) and West Siang and Tirap district with one case each.

Over 12.06 lakh samples have been tested for Covid-19, including 459 on Tuesday, Jampa said, adding that the positivity rate rose to 5.01%.

State Immunisation Officer Dr Dimong Padung said that 14,68,293 people, including 1,889 beneficiaries in the age group of 15-18 years, have been inoculated thus far in the State.
