ITANAGAR: Picturesque Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh witnessed the season's first snowfall, bringing cheers on the faces of the tourists and hardship for the local people.

The bordering district, one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in the Northeast state bordering China, witnesses snowfall every year. The mercury in Tawang plummeted to sub-zero on Wednesday, as the tourist destination recorded a temperature of -2°C while the temperature in state capital Itanagar was 14°C, official sources said.

Tourists travelling to Tawang and Bum-La Pass experienced the first snowfall of the season. The visitors enjoyed the 'blessings of the nature', as the entire area was covered with milky white.

For the office-goers and locals, it was a difficult day. At some locations, the vehicles got stuck because of the heavy snowfall, prompting the commuters to push their cars to pass though such areas, sources added.

According to locals, snowfall on or before Torgya, a three-day local monastic festival celebrated at the renowned Tawang monastery in January, is considered a good omen.
