ITANAGAR: The Central Government has decided to improve tele-connectivity in border areas of Arunachal Pradesh which shares a 1,126 km border with China, a senior district official from Tawang said on Wednesday.

The development came after the Indian and Chinese army clashed along the LAC at Yangtse, 25 km from Tawang, the district headquarters, on December 9 last leading to rising tension.

Tawang deputy commissioner K N Damo informed that the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Bharti Airtel Limited would install additional 23 mobile towers against 43 as requested by the district administration, to improve mobile connectivity in the border district.

"The existing towers were not giving the desired services causing problems not only for the defence forces which guard the border, but also for the civilians living along the border," Damo informed.

Earlier, there was no mobile network in border areas but the situation has changed now with residents enjoying internet service and mobile connectivity even at Bum La Pass and Y-junction but more improvement needed, he said. "Defence areas have been given priority for installation while civilian areas, like Mago, Chuna and Niliya (near Zemithang), are not neglected either," the DC said.
