ITANAGAR: Three live mortar shells were recovered in the Namsai district of Arunachal Pradesh during construction activities on a road, police informed on Friday.

Construction workers, while digging a drain along the Piyom-Diyun road, found live 81-mm mortar shells at a depth of about one and a half feet at Piyom Circle in the district, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) K Duggong informed.

Immediately after receiving the information, the police and the Army unit stationed at Piyom rushed to the spot. The Army took charge of the explosives and later diffused them on Friday morning, the DSP said, adding that an investigation has been initiated to determine the origin and purpose of the recovered mortar shells.

It is pertinent to mention here that security forces successfully intercepted a huge cache of explosives in the Krishnapur area of the district in January this year, near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.

Prompted by credible information about anti-social elements, a joint operation conducted by the CRPF and Mahadevpur police led to the recovery of explosives.
