PASIGHAT: World Pneumonia Day was observed on Friday in East Siang district with a theme Pneumonia Nahi Toh Bachpan Sahi under the banner of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. The campaign will raise awareness and promote prevention to combat the disease from November 12 to February 28, 2022.
While formally launching the campaign, District Medical Officer (DMO) Dr. Kaling Dai informed that the day was celebrated all over the world through various events and activities related to pneumonia. He said that with proper immunization, one can prevent pneumonia and even low cost antibiotics can treat the disease if properly diagnosed.
Meanwhile, DRCHO Dr. Tatok Gao said that pneumonia is one of the main causes of child death in the country contributing to 14 per cent of under-5 Mortality Rate (MR). In Arunachal Pradesh it contributes to 6.25 per cent under-5 MR.
"The main objective of the campaign is to intensify action for reducing mortality due to childhood pneumonia in India to less than 3 per thousand live births, by 2025," he said, adding that the department will carry out various activities including care giving and early medical care.
