GUWAHATI: On Wednesday, Karimganj Police confiscated 33,000 cough syrup bottles worth Rs. 2 crores from a vehicle near the Assam-Tripura border. In connection with the incident, the local police also arrested three people: Jilani, Anaz, and Abrar.
According to the report, after obtaining information from sources, a police team from the Churaibari watch post seized the vehicle during a search and discovered a huge quantity of cough syrup bottles stashed within.
Meanwhile, under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, police opened an investigation.
"We had intercepted a truck in the Churaibari area, and during the thorough search, we found and recovered 33,000 cough syrup bottles from the truck," said Pranab Mili, a police officer of the Churaibari police watch station.
"The market value of the seized cough syrup bottles is estimated to be around Rs two crore," he continued.
Earlier on Sunday, another vehicle carrying 35,300 cough syrup bottles was seized from a Tripura-bound truck.
Furthermore, the Guwahati Police Crime Branch recently seized a large amount of gold in Lakhtokia, Guwahati. During an operation undertaken by the Assam Police Crime Branch, a substantial amount of gold was found, with a market worth of approximately Rs.36 lakh.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma drove a road roller over confiscated contraband during a two-day drug disposal event sponsored by the state police in Nagaon district in 2021, launching a 'zero-tolerance' policy on drugs.
This comes a day after the chief minister, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) chief executive member Tuliram Ronghang, and other officials burned medicines worth Rs 163 crore at Diphu, Karbi Anglong.
Since the new Assam administration took office, the police have recorded 874 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and detained 1,493 people.
