MANGALDAI: Darrang Police on Sunday seized 120 kg of contraband ganja from a car. This has revealed the nefarious activities being committed by an organized gang of smugglers despite the lockdown.

Officer in-charge of Mangaldai Police Station, Inspector Niranjan Barua, as per the instructions from the Superintendent of Police Amrit Bhuyan, laid a naka at Saktola bridge on NH-15. As a part of the plan, SI Chandan Das and in-charge of Traffic wing, ASI Gokul Deka and his team were directed to stay ready at the Ram Mandir point in case they spot a Santro car and to intercept it immediately. At around 12.35 pm, a light brown colour Santro car bearing registration number AS 03 E 2286 coming from Kharupetia side was spotted at the Ram Mandir point and when the car was signalled to stop, the driver sped away in a rash and negligent manner.

The police party also gave a hot chase. Meanwhile, the naka party at Saktola bridge also moved forward and at Konwarpara near Punia bridge, the driver of the Santro on seeing both the police parties, abandoned the car and fled away. Prior to this, the Santro car hit a Tata DI pick-up vehicle registration number AS25CC2799 from the rear side. On being searched, 11 packets of suspected ganja weighing about 120 kg were recovered from inside the Santro car. The value of the seized ganja has been estimated at around Rs 9,60,000.
