14 Persons Arrested in Assam for Social Media Posts on Taliban Activities

The Assam Police's cyber cell has launched a campaign to monitor social media sites. The campaign's purpose is to detect elements which misuse social media

GUWAHATI: 14 persons have been arrested by police in Assam for posting objectionable content on social media related to Taliban activities. Special director general of police (law and order) G.P. Singh informed about this via Twitter on Saturday afternoon.

The tweet by G.P. Singh said – "@assampolice has arrested 14 persons for social media posts regarding Taliban activities that have attracted provisions of law of the land. People are advised to be careful in posts/likes etc on social media platforms to avoid penal action @CMOfficeAssam @DGPAssamPolice @HMOIndia"

The persons who have been held are – Maulana Fazul Karim (49) of Darrang, Abu Bakkar Sidique (55) of Kamrup (R), Saidul Hoque (29) of Kamrup (R), Jawed Mazumder of Cachar, Mozibul Islam (25) of Barpeta, Faruk Hussain Khan (32) of Barpeta, Saiyad Ahmed (27) of Dhubri, Arman Hussain (25) of Dhubri, Nadim Akhtar (23) of Hailakandi, Khandakar Nur Alom of South Salmara, Maulana Yaseen Khan (26) of Goalpara, Maulana Basir Uddin Laskar (65) of Hojai, Mujib Uddin of Karimganj and Mortuza Hussain Khan of Karimganj. Singh advised everyone through his tweet to be careful in giving posts or liking the same on social media.

Among those14 arrested in Assam for posting pro-Taliban include a medicine student, teacher, 3 Maulanas, and a news portal journalist.

It was the first instance of arrest of persons in the state in connection with the Taliban row. The Guwahati police had in May this year held a youth from Dhemaji district for a remark on social media against chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The arrested youth Nipom Chutia is a member of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti. The cyber cell of the Assam Police had earlier this month launched a campaign to monitor social media sites. The purpose of the campaign is to detect unscrupulous elements which misuse social media by posting objectionable, inflammatory content or use the medium to carry out unlawful, clandestine activities.
