151 revenue villages reeling under flood in Lakhimpur; 74,940 people hit

LAKHIMPUR: The flood situation is still grim in Lakhimpur district. Though the heavy downpour has ceased from Saturday night, the flood situation has remained almost unchanged in the affected areas under seven Revenue Circles (RC) in the district.

However, flood receded in nine villages under Naoboicha RC due to the fall of water level of the River Singara. As a result of it, the number of affected villages decreased to 27 on Sunday from Saturday's figure 36. But the situation is still the same and grim in Bihpuriya RC. On the other hand, five more villages were inundated by flood waters in Narayanpur RC on Saturday. Similarly, one more village each under Subansiri RC and Kadam RC, and seven more villages under Dhakuakhana RC got submerged in flood on Sunday. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic situation, the present deluge has crippled the normal life of people and the livestock in the affected areas.

On Sunday in the district, the third wave of the deluge of the year submerged a total of 151 villages under seven RCs. Out of them, 62 villages under Bihpuriya RC, 29 villages under Narayanpur RC, 27 villages under Naoboicha RC, 13 villages under Dhakuakhana RC, 8 villages under Subansiri RC, 7 villages under Kadam RC and 5 villages under North Lakhimpur RC were severely hit by flood on the day. A total of 74,940 people, 2151.65 hectares of crop area, 20,212 numbers of big animals, 9,086 numbers of small animals and 7,022 numbers of poultry were affected by flood. The district administration distributed relief items at 25 relief distribution points, 13 under Naoboicha RC, 3 under Subansiri RC, 5 under Dhakuakhana RC, 1 under Bihpuriya RC and 3 under Narayanpur RC on Sunday. The 30 inmates in the relief camp, which was opened on Friday at Sonapur Buniyadi LP School under Naoboicha RC, went back home on Sunday.

On the other hand, the NEEPCO has been still releasing the excess water from the catchment area of Ranganadi Hydro Electric Plant (RHEP) since Friday. The excess water from the Ranganadi dam was released by opening the Dam Gate No. 5 by 200 mm from 6:00 pm, by 500 mm from 8.00 pm, by 300 mm from 10.30 pm on Friday, by 500 mm from 4:00am, by 600 mm from 11.30 am, by 400 mm from 1.30 pm, by 600 mm from 9.30 pm on Saturday. At present water has been released from the Ranganadi dam by opening the same gate by 400 mm from 4.30 am till the time of filing this report.
