154th Gandhi Jayanti as ‘International Day of Non violence’observed

MANGALDAI: Synchronizing with the worldwide celebration of Gandhi Jayanti as the ‘International Day of Non violence’ following the declaration by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2007, Darrang district too joined their hands in celebrating the 154th ‘Gandhi Jayanti’ with a day-long programme. Darrang district administration, in association with Mangaldai Municipality Board, organized the ‘Gandhi Jayanti’ at Gandhi Smriti Udyan. Mangaldai Parliamentarian Dilip Saikia and District Commissioner Munindra Nath Ngatey ceremonially marked the beginning of the ‘Gandhi Jayanti’ by lighting a lamp and offering floral tribute in holy memory of the ‘Father of the Nation’. Civic body Chairperson Nirmali Devi Sarma, senior citizen Arun Kumar Barua, Gobinda Upadhyaya, retired Administrative Officer Hari Chandra Sarma, Assistant Commissioner Ihsanur Hussain, DIPRO Sameer Shandilya, senior journalist Mayukh Goswami, and other leading citizens also offered floral tribute.

Later, addressing the function, Mangaldai Parliamentarian Dilip Saikia highlighted the ideology and teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and also spoke on their relevance in the present situation. “Mahatma Gandhi believed that the soul of India resides in the villages, and that isthe reason that he always concentrated on the uplifting of rural lives, advocating for ‘Gram Swaraj’. For the benefit and all-round welfare of the rural people, Gandhiji preferred the cottage industries only to make the common people self-sufficient. The biggest contribution of Mahatma Gandhi to the citizens of the world is the policy of non-violence which at present has been adopted in different foreign countries,” said Parliamentarian Dilip Saikia in his speech. He also announced to sanction an amount of Rs 30 lakh for the renovation of the Gandhi Smriti Udyan.

In his welcome speech, District Commissioner Munindra Nath Ngatey made a fervent appeal to the younger generation to read and study the teachings, life and works, and ideologies of Mahatma Gandhi. “Entire civil societies around the globe today have taken up the policy of non-violence and recognized Mahatma Gandhi as a superhuman. It is the responsibility of every citizen of our country to follow the path shown by Mahatma Gandhi, and we should concentrate more deeply on the development of our rural society and lives,” he added.

GOLAGHAT: The Numaligarh Nagorik Manch celebrated Gandhi Jayanti at its office premises on Monday. In this regard, a meeting was held under the presidency of Bani Phukan, and the aims and purpose of the meeting were elaborated on by the Numaliharh Nagorik Mancha general secretary, Promod Dutta.

Earlier, Ajit Phukan lit the lamp in front of Gandhiji’s photo. In the meeting, several problems arising in the nearby area of Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) were discussed. The meeting discussed how to approach solutions to the problems facing the villages in education, health, employment, and transportation. The meeting criticised the role of NRL in failing to provide facilities for the overall development of the area.

DIBRUGARH: The DPS Dibrugarh Management and staff members celebrated International Non-Violence Day in school on Monday. The day began with the lighting of the lamp by the teachers and the helper staff members, followed by the offering of shraddhanjali to Mahatma Gandhi. The Swacchata Pakhwada celebration also came to an end at the school. The Air Force Road next to the Air Force station was cleaned. The campaign was led by PVC CA Sanjay Jain, board member Banita Jain, and school principal Probhati Biswas.

The school had undertaken a mass cleanliness drive in and around the school along with the residents of Titadomoru and Harabari village for a fortnight. The management and principal thanked the local residents, the teachers, the students, and everyone who has helped make this celebration a grand success.
