DIPHU: The 15th National Mourning Day for the victims of the ethnic clashes of October 17, 2005 at Charchim-Prisek was observed on Saturday.
Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) CEM Tuliram Ronghang, MLA Dr. Mansing Rongpi, EMs and MACs, student bodies and social organizations attended the 15th National Mourning Day programme and paid heartfelt tribute to the victims of Charchim- Prisek. Also, a moment of silence was observed to pay tribute to the innocent people who died in the clashes.
CEM Ronghang paid tribute to the 42 victims who were killed inside a bus at Charchim Prisek on October 17, 2005, by an armed terrorist group and announced that the families of the victims received Rs 5 lakh as compensation. CEM Ronghang made a commitment for construction of prayer hall and installation of solar light, boundary wall and installation of RCC ringwell for potable drinking water facility.
All offices and institutions under administrative control of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council remained closed on Saturday as a mark of respect and to pay tribute to the victims.
People of Karbi Anglong lit candles in their homes and public places to pray for the eternal peace of the victims who had died in the ethnic clashes.
