GUWAHATI: Two mountaineers from Assam have unfurled the Indian flag and the traditional Assamese gamosa atop Mount Kanchenjunga to mark a major success of the Assam Mountaineering Association (AMA )for becoming the first organisation from the region to achieve this feat. This expedition was flagged off by the president of India during her previous visit to the region.
Bhaskar Baruah and Jayanta Nath are the two Assamese mountaineers who achieved this remarkable fest. A total number of seven mountaineers from the Assam Mountaineering Association left for this expedition from the state.
The Mount Kanchenjunga Expedition 2023 of the Assam Mountaineering Association was officially flagged off by the president of India, Droupadi Murmu. She had handed over an ice axe baton symbolising the start of the expedition. She also wished her best to the seven-member expedition team to concur the mountain.
Assam Chief Minister also gave his full support to the expedition from the beginning and had wished the team at the official event for the seeing off of the team which was also attended by the Governor of Assam alongside several other guests.
He also congratulated them on their success over Twitter on Thursday. He tweeted, “In a moment of soaring pride for us, glad to share that 7:15 am today, two Assamese mountaineers - Bhaskar Baruah and Jayanta Nath unfurled the Tiranga and the Gamusa at Mt Kanchenjunga, 3rd highest mountain peak. With this, Assam Mountaineering Association (AMA) has become the first organisation from NE have this unique distinction. We are honoured to have supported this endeavour. My congratulations to the Mountaineers and AMA.”
Sponsored by the state Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare, the team consisted of seven members. In addition to team leader Manas Barua, the team consisted of medical officer Dr Jagadish Basumatary, deputy leader Upen Chakraborty, Koushik Das, Bhaskar Baruah, Jayanta Nath, and Shekhar Bordoloi.
