GUWAHATI: A court in Golaghat sentenced five people to prison for four distinct counts of sexual assault on minor girls under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO).
In the year 2019, Lakhindra Sareng and Sukram Majhi were convicted of sexually assaulting a minor girl and were sentenced to 20 years in jail and a fine.
Meanwhile, Sukura Karmakar was sentenced to seven years in prison together with them for sexually abusing a four-year-old girl.
Apart from this, Aminul Sikdar and Anil Bora, two other offenders, were sentenced to prison for two separate incidents. Aminul was found guilty of sexual assaulting a 13-year-old child, while Anil was found guilty of assaulting a five-year-old child.
Earlier, Rajinikanth Daimary who raped three minor girls of Jengorbori village, Morigaon, was injured in a police encounter when he tried to run away from police custody on December 22.
According to police, the accused was taken to the crime scene for investigation when he tried to run away from the police custody and to stop him, a police officer shot him.
As the family of the three girls lodged a complaint against the accused, a case was registered under sections 376 AB and R/W section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act and Daimary was arrested.
"A case was registered on December 20 at Laharighat police station against Rajani Daimary for allegedly raping three minor girls, between the age group of 6-7 years. We caught him from the Amtola area on Wednesday", Police said.
