66 candidates file nomination papers for Nagaon

A total of 202 candidates, excluding Raha town, filed their nomination papers on Tuesday for the upcoming municipality as well as town committee polls which are scheduled to be held on March 6.

NAGAON: A total of 202 candidates, excluding Raha town, filed their nomination papers on Tuesday for the upcoming municipality as well as town committee polls which are scheduled to be held on March 6. The district administration has made all preparations to conduct free and fair election for Nagaon Municipality Board and Dhing, Raha and Kampur town committees. As per information, out of total 26 seats in Nagaon municipality board, candidates from the ruling BJP filed nomination papers for 22 seats while its alliance partner - Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) -filed nomination papers only in four seats.

Meanwhile, candidates from the opposition Congress filed nomination papers in 21 seats while AJP candidates filed nomination papers in the other 5 seats. Significantly, the opposition Congress decided to support AJP candidates in those 5 seats. Besides, Aam Aadmi party filed nomination papers in a seat. Significantly, in two seats - ward no. 1 and 10- the authority concerned received only one nomination paper each, sources said, adding that in ward no 8, BJP candidate Simanta Bora filed nomination papers while in ward no 10, BJP candidate Debashree Borthakur Bezbaruah filed nomination papers. Sources claimed that in 26 seats of Nagaon Municipality Board, total 66 candidates from BJP, its alliance partner AGP, opposition Congress, AJP, Aam Aadmi party and other Independents filed nomination papers. On the other hand, in Kampur town committee, 24 candidates filed nomination papers for 10 seats while 22 candidates filed nomination papers for 10 seats, sources added.
