KOKRAJHAR: Police in Kokrajhar on Monday evening seized 685 kg of ganja from drug smugglers in Srirampur interstate check gate while a smuggler was shot at while trying to snatch the pistol from police. Talking to mediapersons, Kokrajhar SP Pratik Vijay Thube said the police on Monday evening at around 6.40 pm detained a truck, Reg No- NL 01 Q 8878, and seized 70 packets of ganja weighing about 685 kgs from the possession of the driver Sanjit Kumar (23), S/O-Harendra Ray of Banwaripur Mastichak Saran, PS-Dariyapur of Chapra district of Bihar. He said the driver was taking the seized ganja from Guwahati to Bihar with concealing the same by making a secret chamber inside the vehicle.
Thube said on inquiry it was learnt that the accused person kept more packets of ganja near Sarfanguri. At the time of seizure, the accused person tried to snatch the pistol of the police personnel and so they fired at him. He received bullet injuries on his right leg and was immediately shifted to Kokrajhar RN Brahma Civil Hospital from where he was referred to Barpeta Medical college. Some anti-social elements set on fire the seized vehicle and fled away. The fire brigade was immediately informed.
