69,290 Voters To Decide Fate Of 127 Candidates In Lakhimpur District

Lakhimpur: As per the directives of the Assam State Election Commission, the campaign for the Municipal Board Election, 2022 formally concluded on Friday in Lakhimpur district district too along the rest of the State. However, the contesting candidates can conduct door-to-door campaign until 8 am of Saturday as per a revised circular.

During these days, since the last date of the withdrawal of candidature on February 20, the contesting candidates nominated by political parties like Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and other independent candidates campaigned aggressively in four municipal board areas under Lakhimpur district. Notably, this year the urban body poll will be held to four municipal boards under the district. These municipal boards are North Lakhimpur Municipal Board (NLMB) , Bihpuria Municipal Board (BMB), Narayanpur Municipal Board (NMB) and Dhakuakhana Municipal Board (DMB). All these four municipal boards have covered a total of 52 wards under the urban areas of the district.

In the district, in support of the contesting BJP-AGP Alliance candidates, Bihpuria MLA Dr. Amiya Kumar Deka and other local leaders campaigned in BMB and NMB areas, while Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah, Lakhimpur MLA Manab Deka campaigned in NLMB area. Dhakuakhana MLA Naba Kumar Doley campaigned in DMB area. Similarly Lakhimpur district unit BJP president Phanidhar Baruah, and other office bearers, local leaders campaigned in NLMB, BMB and NMB areas which fall under the party's organizational district. Similarly, Dhakuakhana district unit BJP president Pradip Chamuah and other leaders did election campaigning in DMB area.

On the other hand, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Bora, who was the former MLA of Bihpuria LAC, took part in extensive election campaign under BMB and NMB areas. APCC general secretary Ajay Phukan, Rupahi MLA Nurul Huda, Lakhimpur District Congress Committee former president Dr Joy Prakash Das, existing president Pradip Gogoi, general secretary Prasanta Kumar Gogoi and other leaders campaigned in NLMB area in support of the Congress candidates. Similarly, All India Congress Committee general secretary Bikash Upadhyay, APCC general secretary Padma Losan Doley took part in the election campaign rallies in DMB area along with other local leaders. Simultaneously, the contesting independent candidates under the four municipal boards of the district also conducted massive campaign by taking their developmental agendas to the voters.

In Lakhimpur district, a total of 127 candidates are in fray covering the four municipal boards. A total of 69,290 voters, 34,224 male voters and 35,066 female voters, will decide the fate of these candidates on March 6. Altogether 88 polling stations have been set up in the urban areas under the 4 municipal boards of the district to hold the election on the stipulated day.
