DIBRUGARH: Another case of deaths of multiple vultures has been reported from the state of Assam. A group of localities discovered seven dead vultures near Bogibeel in Dibrugarh along with several more in deteriorated health conditions.
The state of Assam has seen the death of vultures from time to time and generally poisoning of carcasses is the reason for the mass deaths of this scavenging avian species. The same has been speculated for this incident as well.
According to reports from the site of the incident, the dead vultures as well as multiple more in serious conditions were discovered. The Divisional Forest Officer of Dibrugarh had mentioned that they are suspecting poisoning. He also mentioned that the samples taken from the dead vultures were sent for testing to find the exact reason of the deaths.
He mentioned, “We are suspecting carcass poisoning. The last time we saw such cases, Diclofenac was found in the system of some cows. Diclofenac was used in the treatment of cattle which led to the poisoning of the vultures. After which the use of that chemical was banned.”
He also mentioned that the ill vultures will be treated by veterinary experts and released into the wild once they recover.
In a previous incident, a total of 6 vultures were found dead in Dhakuakhana subdivision of the Lakhimpur district towards the end of February. The carcasses of the birds were recovered at a paddy field known as Pagali Pothar of Bagisa Gaon under Dhakuakhana Police Station.
