7 Members Of Bir Lachit Sena Arrested In Assam's Golaghat in Extortion Case

GUWAHATI: The Golaghat police of Assam arrested as many as 7 members of Bir Lachit Sena on charges of extortion and for threatening a businessman.

All the seven members are arrested under various sections of the Indian Penal Code for trying to extort money from a shop owner by force and also for breach of peace.

According to reports, the members of Bir Lachit Sena allegedly closed the smartphone shop of a person and made various accusations against the owner of the shop.

The owner of the shop who is non-Assamese is accused by arrestees of not paying the pending salaries to one of his Assamese employees working in the mobile phone shop.

The seven persons arrested by police were later identified as Jayanta Gogoi, Dipen Gogoi, Dwipen Gogoi, Rintu Gogoi, Guno Hazarika, Tarun Lahon and Dipjyoti Talukdar.

The official of the Sarupather Police station in the Golaghat district of Assam arrested the members of the organization on Monday.

Meanwhile, a member of the Bir Lachit Sena makes various statements stating that the allegations are not true and it is baseless. The member said that the seven people have not demanded any money from the shop owner and were arrested unlawfully.

He further stated that those members of the organization had attempted to help an Assamese citizen who was suffering because of certain financial conditions. Therefore in order to help the employee in his distress situation, the members demanded the shop owner pay the required pending salaries of the employee.

The Bir Lachit Sena members further claimed that they were pushed in conspiracy framed by the owner of the mobile shop who has his connections with the police officials.

However, all seven members were sent to judicial custody as per the extortion case.

The members of the organization were arrested several times for similar reasons like hooliganism and extortion of money. Earlier 13 Bir Lachit Sena members were detained by police for forcing two youths to kneel down before them. They were arrested by Bhagaduttapur police but later granted bail with a notice under IPC section 41.
