MANGALDAI: On the eve of the 75th Independence Day celebration, rich tributes were paid in memory of the freedom fighters of the erstwhile undivided Darrang district under the aegis of Mangaldai Media Circle. In this connection, a tribute offering ceremony was organized on Thursday evening here on the bank of the historic 'Borpukhuri' where altogether 75 traditional earthen lamps were lit.
Bijoy Chandra Bhagawati, a veteran writer and a senior member of a freedom fighter's family, along with Mangaldai legislator Basanta Das, jointly initiated the process of lamp lighting and offering of the floral tribute. The ceremony was attended by the family members of several freedom fighters, including Paundit Dineswar Sarma and his brother Tankeswar Sarma, Pani Ram Das, Ratneswar Sarma, Daneswar Hazarika, Dineswar Sharma, Maink Chandra Doloi, Gangadhar Saharia, Bipin Chandra Medhi, Rup Kanta Deka, Jiten Sarma and Jogendra Nath Saikia, among others. All recalled the contribution of the district in the freedom movement and stressed the need of carrying forward this glorious chapter in a scientific way for the next generation of the region.
The function ended with the vote of thanks offered by Mayukh Goswami, secretary of the scribes' body, and was conducted by its president, Bhargab Kumar Das.
