7th edition of Professor Sarat Mahanta Memorial Lecture delivered in Sivasagar

SIVASAGAR: The seventh edition of 'Professor Sarat Mahanta Memorial Lecture' was held on Saturday in which renowned novelist and Sahitya Akademi Award recipient Dr Rita Chowdhury spoke on the topic 'Reflection of creator's life experience in novels'.

The lecture was organized by Sibsagar Press Club in association with Sibsagar College, Joysagar to mark the death anniversary of the renowned educationist, writer, journalist and human rights activist. (Late) Prof Sarat Mahanta was a former Member of the Assam Human Rights Commission and former Head of the History Department at Sibsagar College. He was also a founder member and chief advisor of Sibsagar Press Club.

"What we create represents time. The notion that changes over time are reflected in literature," Dr Rita Chowdhury said. Delivering the lecture, Dr Chowdhury said, "The social system is getting complicated at present. This aspect is also reflected in literature. In novels we can find creator's life experiences."

She also said, "We have recently reached the extremes of individualism. This is my life, my time - such arguments come first to the minds of children these days." The novelist also spoke about the environment in which she grew up herself.

In novels like 'Deolankhui', 'Makam', Dr Chowdhury also mentioned how she had instilled her life experience. Dr Rita Chowdhury also unveiled a book titled 'Gender, State and Society' by educationist Sarat Mahanta's son and Gargaon College Principal Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta. A poetry book named 'Celeste' of Ashwika Mahanta, granddaughter of late Sarat Mahanta, was also released on the occasion.

In addition, a student named Ramisha Fariha, who passed the recently announced HSLC examinations, was awarded. The memorial lecture was held in line with the ninth death anniversary of Prof Sarat Mahanta.
