8,000 kg of lali gur seized in Namrup Railway Station by Excise department

At least 278 bags of around 8,000 kg lali gur (molasses) were seized in Namrup Railway Station on Tuesday

NAHARKATIA: At least 278 bags of around 8,000 kg lali gur (molasses) were seized in Namrup Railway Station on Tuesday in an operation of the excise department led by Excise Superintendent, Dibrugarh, Ajoy Bayan.

Recovery of such a huge quantity of lali gur from Namrup Railway Station had created a considerable sensation among the local people, bringing back memories of the hooch tragedy in certain tea estates of Golaghat district last year.

Based on specific information, the excise team led by Excise Superintendent, Dibrugarh, Ajoy Bayan conduct an operation in Namrup Railway Station on Tuesday evening and total 278 bags of lali gur weighing around 8,000 kg were seized. But no one was caught.

Lali gur is generally used for preparing local illicit liquor (sulai) and has great demand among local liquor manufacturers. The liquor produced by some unscrupulous elements is usually supplied to nearby tea estates and other villages for consumption. Consumption of such illicit liquor usually claims a lot of human lives.
