A tribute to Prof Durga Prasad Ghimire

Noted author, singer, composer and social worker Professor Durga Prasad Ghimire, a resident of Chandmari,Tezpur died on December 25 due to old age ailment. He was born at Burachapari, Tezpur in the year 1933. He passed matric from Government High School, Tezpur and graduated from St. Anthony, Shillong, and completed his master degree from Guwahati University. He also did his masters in Nepali from Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu. He joined Darrang College as a lecturer in Nepali Department and retired as the Head of the Department. He authored 25 books which include publication for Higher Secondary and Degree students. His publication includes Burachapari Eti Britantha, Dhukdhuki, a collection of songs, Samidha, collection of articles, Shatvisha, collection of poems, poet Pushpalal Upadhyay, his life and contribution, Sadhana, a collection of articles, Shanti ko Khojema, a collection of poems, Sarada and Purnapatra are very popular in Nepali literature. He also edited Akha Patrika of Darrang Nepali Sahitya Parishad, Prasad Singh Subba Smarika, Sonitpur Nepali Sahitya Parishad Patrika, Sanmelan, Assam Gorkha Sanmelan Patrika, Prasad Singh Subba Smriti Grantha etc. He was the executive chairman of the Nepali Sahitya Parishad Assam, president of Harihar Dham Unnayan Samiti. He was the recipient of literary pension from Government of Assam. He was honoured with Hari Bhakta Kotowal Memorial Award and felicitated by Jyoti Sangha Tezpur, Nepali Sahitya Parishad, Assam, Nagarik Mancha Tezpur, Bharatiya Sahitya Parishad Tezpur unit for his contribution.

Late Ghimire was very popular among the students for his helpful nature. Many of the under privileged students were established in life for his selfless help and guidance. He was a popular author of Sikkim and Nepal. His death news has cast a pale of gloom at Tezpur. A large number of his students, well wishers visited his house to pay homage and funeral was largely attended. His death is a huge loss for Nepali literature. His death was condoled by many organisations of Tezpur. He was 90 and survived by wife, two sons and a daughter. On the occasion of his Addhya Shraddha, I pay my homage for the peaceful rest of the departed soul.
