DOOMDOOMA: In response to the call given by the All Adivasi Students' Association of Assam (AASAA), Tinsukia District Committee, its sixteen Anchalik Committees and primary units in the district burnt the effigies of two MPs -Rameswar Teli (Dibrugarh) and Pradhan Baruah (Lakhimpur) along with five MLAs - Sanjay Keshan (Tinsukia), Durga Bhumij (Doomdooma), Balin Chetia (Sadiya), Suren Phukan (Digboi) and Bhaskar Sharma (Margherita) - on Saturday for not placing strongly their demands namely, granting of ST status to the Adivasis, enhancement of wages of tea-labourers to Rs 351 and allotment of land pattas to the tea workers, neither in the State Assembly not in the Parliament.

Although AASAA, by a memorandum submitted about six months back, had urged them to strongly plead their case in their respective houses, yet they overlooked it and instead chose to keep quiet. So AASAA activists, in order to express their disappointment, burnt the effigies of the MLAs and MPs, Suresh Bhumij, vice-president of AASAA Tinsukia District Committee, said.

The programme was taken up under the auspices of AASAA, Doomdooma Anchalik Committee with active cooperation of its primary units and sixteen Anchalik Committees. Similar protest programme was also staged at Hansara, Sookerating, Beesakopie, Tara, Budlabheta and Dhoedam, he further said.
