LAKHIMPUR: "We will continue our agitation until and unless the CAA is scrapped," said the people of Ghilamora in Lakhimpur district while vowing to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) on Thursday.
The people, from students to senior citizens, declared this stand against the contentious Act while taking part in an agitation programme organized by the Ghilamora Citizens' Forum, Ghilamora regional unit of All Assam Students' Union (AASU), Ghilamora branch of Axam Xahitya Xabha and Ghilamora Anchalik Mahila Samiti. The protesters shouted slogans against CAA and the Centre and State Government. They declared that they would never accept the Act under any circumstances.
On the other hand, the regional unit AASU leaders became vocal against the alleged intolerant attitude on the part of the State Government in order to dominate anti-CAA agitators across the State. They severely criticized the State Government in this regard and clarified that the dominating principle of the government would not be able to stop the anti-CAA protest.
Similarly, the Senior Citizens'Forum condemned the arrest of anti-CAA agitators in the State. The forum opined that human right was violated by arresting them and demanded the government to release them at the earliest.
The Dhalpur regional unit AASU along with the 30 ethnic organizations also initiated bikshobh at Dhalpur centre on Thursday demanding the scrapping of the Act. The people of the area spontaneously joined in the sit-in staged by the organization. Taking part in the protest programme, Lakhimpur district AASU general secretary Dhanmoni Dutta, vice-president Mridul Das and North Lakhimpur subdivisional unit president Simanta Neog delivered speeches opposing the Act. They severely criticized the Union and State governments regarding the issue and asserted that their organization would not allow the governments to bring a threat to the existence of the indigenous communities of the State. The Rajgarh-Simaluguri regional unit AASU also staged a protest against CAA on the same day in its jurisdiction along with anti-CAA organizations.
The 48-hour long hunger strike initiated by the All Assam Moria Youth-Students Union in front of Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner's office from Tuesday opposing the Act concluded on Thursday. The dignitaries of the organization reiterated that their organization would continue their agitation against the Act until it was scrapped.
