LAKHIMPUR: Demanding the closure of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP), the activists of the North Lakhimpur regional unit of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) burnt the effigies of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Power Minister RK Singh and NHPC on Friday.

The organization staged the protest in North Lakhimpur town in the wake the massive havoc in the downstream area of the River Subansiri created by the SLHP with its rolling water over the main dam of the project since Thursday. By staging the protest programme, the organization expressed vehement resentment for continuing the construction works of the contentious project 'secretly' while ignoring the public protest against it. The organization warned that the protest would be intensified against the project in the upcoming days.
