SIVASAGAR: While the Centre is set to table the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) in Lok Sabha on Monday, protests against the contentious Bill continued in Sivasagar.
Anti-CAB protesters took to the streets in Sivasagar denouncing the BJP governments in the Centre as well as in the State. Hundreds of protesters comprising students, youths, journalists and activists of different organizations under the banner of AASU took out a massive torchlight procession against the Bill from Boarding Field on Saturday evening. The rally was led by AASU education secretary Sarat Hazarika, AASU Sivasagar district general secretary Samiran Phukan and other leaders.
On the other hand, two youths sat on an indefinite hunger strike in front of the statue of Dr. BR Ambedkar near the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Sivasagar, in protest against the Bill from Saturday. Protesters Jintu Mech and Jubu Khan have been staging the protest from 11 are off Saturday, demanding unconditional withdrawal of the bill.
On Sunday, activists of Brihattar Asomiya Yuva Mancha, Sivasagar district committee led by its president Jadav Gogoi, Sivasagar town committee president Bishnu Saikia, and secretary Prashanta Borgohain staged a protest programme ‘Ranadhwani’ at Dolmukh Chariali in Sivasagar town.
