DOOMDOOMA: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU), Tinsukia District Committee staged sit-in in front of the Divisional Forest Office, Doomdooma on Thursday to lodge protest against illegal timber trade that was allegedly going on unabated for quite some time in the forest division under reference.

Later, they handed over a memorandum addressed to the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Doomdooma ForestDivision and demanded immediate stoppage of all sorts of illegal timber trade and protection of valuable forest wealth. In their memorandum, the students' body alleged that the illegal timber trade was going on due to unholy nexus between a gang of plunderers of forest products and a section of dishonest forest officials. Not only that, the gang of illegal timber traders also got indulgence from the said section of dishonest forest officials to illegally transport the timber procured clandestinely from the forests of neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh and carry on their bumper business here by taking advantage of the banning of forest operations in Assam.

In the memorandum, the students' body further warned the authority of launching vigorous movement in they failed to take appropriate actions for stopping such illegal trade for the greater interest of preservation of valuable forest products.
