LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district unit of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) will intensify stir against the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) for releasing excess water without prior information from the catchment area of the Ranganadi Hydro Electric Plant (RHEP) located at Yazali in the State of Arunachal Pradesh. This was declared by Lakhimpur AASU president Pulokjyoti Borah and general secretary Dhanmoni Dutta through a press communiqué.
"Due to release of excess water from the RHEP, the people of Lakhimpur living in the downstream area of the River Ranganadi have to suffer every year. Despite consecutive demands made by AASU, the Union Government has not initiated any action against the NEEPCO till day. As a result of it, the RHEP with the power of generating 405MW electricity, has continued damages in Lakhimpur district. The NEEPCO released a large amount of excess water from the RHEP on Saturday without serving any prior information to the riverine people. Water released thus from the dam will cause extensive damage in Lakhimpur, Telahi, Kamalaboria, Naoboicha and Bihpuriya mouzas in the district. Under such circumstances, it is clear that the NEEPCO has no concern for the life and properties of the riverine people," the press communiqué stated.
In this connection, Lakhimpur AASU severely criticized Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and his government for not taking any initiative against NEEPCO. The organization also expressed vehement resentment against the Lakhimpur district administration for remaining silent and not making the siren system operational to alert the riverine people when water is released from the Ranganadi dam.
