LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district committee of All Assam Unemployed Association (AAUA) has demanded strict action against dredging of soil in the Ranganadi riverbed. In this context, the organization submitted a memorandum to Sumit Sattawan, the Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur district, demanding his immediate step. In the memorandum, AAUA Lakhimpur district unit president Binod Das and general secretary Bhupen Sonowal said, "At present, along with the rest part of Assam, common people in the district of Lakhimpur too have to suffer a lot due to the grim situation of unprecedented flood. The weak embankments of the State have pushed the flood victims to critical situations.
In Lakhimpur district, the riverine people have to live in fear due to the release of excess water by the NEEPCO from the Pare Hydro Electric Project (PHEP) located at Doimukh of Arunachal Pradesh through river Dikrong and from Ranganadi Hydro Electric Plant (RHEP) located at Yazali of the same State through river Ranganadi. Amid such situation, a section of dishonest people (businessmen) has been dredging the soil in the Ranganadi riverbed truck by truck, just near the left side embankment of the river at Pahumora for business purposes. Such illegal dredging of the riverbed has impacted the Ranganadi to change its course and it is a massive threat to the people, farmers, animal rearers living on the bank of the river." Under such circumstances, the Lakhimpur district unit of AAUA demanded the Deputy Commissioner to take steps to stop the dredging in the riverbed and to take legal action against the dishonest section of businessmen, involved in it, by launching a probe into the issue.
