LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Unemployed Association (AAUA) on Thursday initiated agitation programme in North Lakhimpur town demanding adequate steps on the part of the State Government with regard to addressing various problems.

Demanding for the mitigation of the burning unemployment problem, the organization staged a two-hour long sit-in on Thursday at Adarsha Bazaar. In connection with their demand, Lakhimpur unit AAUA president Binod Das and general secretary Khirod Cheti said, "The unemployment problem in the State has assumed alarming status as the days roll on. At present, there are more than 60 lakh unemployed youths in the State, including the registered unemployed and non-registered unemployed youths. The scenario concerned has worsened with the return of 12 lakh people who have come back to their native land after losing their jobs in other States due to COVID-19 pandemic. Under such circumstances, we demand the State Government to adopt crucial policies to mitigate the burning problem."

Extending support to the stir, Lakhimpur district MASS adviser Raju Singha, chairperson Sumu Dutta, AAUA State general secretary Jiban Rajkhowa and other leaders took part in the programme. By staging the same programme, the organization demanded to pay unemployed allowance to unemployed youths, to fill up all the posts lying vacant for a long time in various departments under the government before 2021 by initiating transparent process, to allot the waste lands and marshes temporarily to the unemployed youths for productive work to generate self-employment means, to resolve the flood and erosion problem permanently and to compensate the flood and erosion victims adequately. In support of these demands, the organization submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal through Dr. Jeevan B, the Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur.
