SILCHAR: Amid much controversy, Abhijit Paul on Wednesday took the charge of president of Cachar district Congress committee as the leading players of the DCC were noticeably absent. Paul was recently made the DCC president by State Congress president Bhupen Bora. The outgoing DCC president Tamal Kanti Banik was made one of the general secretary of the APCC which he eventually refused. The appointment of Paul as the DCC president was opposed by a big section of the opposition party. APCC working president Kamalakha Dey Purkayastha even had gone to the extent of suspecting big financial deal behind the appointment of Paul.

Purkayastha said, “I have already conveyed my resentment over the decision of Bhupen Bora. I have nothing personal against Abhijit Paul but he is not the proper choice for the post.” Paul on the other hand, claimed that he had the blessings of Purkayastha and another party MLA Misbahul Islam Laskar. APCC vice president Arun Dutta Majumdar, however, said that Paul had proved his mettle as a student leader and had served the party for years.

After assuming the post of district Congress president, Abhijit Paul said, since he had to hurriedly take the charge on Wednesday itself as his ‘Pandit’ had advised him to, no formal function could be arranged. “ Very soon we will arrange a meeting and APCC president Bhupen Bora, central leader like Prithiraj Sathe and others will attend,” Paul said.
