Absconding murder convict Hifzur Rahman shot dead by Cachar police

SILCHAR: Exactly after two months, the absconding life-term convict Hifzur Rahman was shot dead by Cachar police in the wee hours on Tuesday. Confirming the news, Cachar SP Nomal Mahatta in a press briefing said, they had an information that Hifzur was returning to Barak Valley via Meghalaya border. A special team of Silchar police apprehended him at Assam-Meghalaya border at 3 pm and as Hifzur was being escorted to Silchar, he tried to escape from the vehicle near Burunga in Katigorah. He even had a scuffle with the policemen that left two of them injured. In retaliation police fired at him. Hifzur was first taken to Kalain Primary Health Centre. As he was profusely bleeding Hifzur was referred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital where he finally breathed his last under treatment. Two policemen were also admitted in the SMCH, however they were out of danger.

On May 11, Hifzur Rahman and another murder convict Deep Nunia broke the Silchar Central Jail and escaped. Mahatta on Tuesday informed that search for Nunia was on.

Hifzur Rahman was sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering Naz Ahmed of Bhanga area in Badarpur almost a decade ago. The kidnap and murder of teenager Naz had triggered much unrest in Badarpur. Even curfew had to be clamped. Eventually Naz’s father Tofail Ahmed, the then president of the Badarpur unit of AIUDF was also shot dead.

Hifzur along with his partner in crime Salim were arrested and subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment. Both of them were in Karimganj jail. Few months back, Hifzur was shifted to Silchar jail following reports of his regular rude behaviour with the other inmates. Hifzur was allegedly running gambling racket inside Karimganj jail. On May 11, Hifzur along with another murder convict Deep Nunia escaped from Silchar jail by digging a tunnel inside the toilet. Exactly after two months, he was apprehended and later encountered to death. Mahatta said, they had information that Hifzur had crossed the border and took shelter in Bangladesh. Even in this two months, he was involved in various criminal activities.
